Over 1 million Uyghur Muslims living in China have been subject to arbitrary arrests, confinement to camps, increased mass surveillance monitoring every street and every action of the people in the region, and laws that ban religious items such as the Qur’an and Hijab.
Over 1 million Uyghur Muslims living in China have been subject to arbitrary arrests, confinement to camps, increased mass surveillance monitoring every street and every action of the people in the region, and laws that ban religious items such as the Qur’an and Hijab. In essence, these Uyghurs are forbidden to be Muslim and are victims of severe human rights abuses and violations. Stories of torture, forced medical experiments and rape are coming to light, and the atrocities don’t end there.
Reports and accounts reveal that prisoners’ hands and feet are shackled all day, except when they have to write. Even in sleep they were shackled, and are required to sleep on their right side, and anyone who turns over is punished. Punishment takes place publicly on a daily basis.
It is estimated that 50,000 Uyghurs have fled their homeland in China’s Xinjiang region (previously known as East Turkestan) and now live in Turkey the majority of them living in Istanbul. Many of the newly arriving Uyghurs are women and children who have left their families behind to seek security.
What We Are Doing
